A healthy economy is not an export economy. A healthy economy is an economy that creates value internally. Foreign investments are nice, but they are not needed. Export revenue is nice but it’s not strictly necessary. We have forgotten what it means to develop an economy that can stand on its feet without a massive influx from the outside. Don’t get me wrong – I am all for free trade. I am for the removal of trade barriers when this makes sense and I am fully in favor of optimizing the flow of goods and services. But when trade becomes a tool to kick countries into compliance, it’s a tool for oppression. I wish Australia to keep up the spine it has shown so far against all odds. It’s the others that will lose out in the end.
Australian trade partners are gearing up for a low-carbon economy, and with a new EU impost looming, our biggest exports could be left out in the cold.
