Costly & Pathetic ‘Performance’: Thousands of Wind Turbines Being Replaced After 12 Years

What happened to the “Build them once, have free energy forever” mantra? My own city Vienna is surrounded by wind generators and I know quite a few of their operators personally. Some turbines don’t even make it past 8 years of operation and it is not only the blades that need replacement. The gearboxes and other moving parts of those contraptions often fall to pieces due to mechanical stresses. And they are not cheap to replace. Often, the turbine gets taken down and not replaced as the cost of doing so is crazy. Which leaves the owner of the ground with a massive steel and concrete block in his soil. Don’t wait for decommissioning money. It’s all gone by this point.
