Federalism is not only the mechanism that exposes the failings of central planning, it’s also the remedy to fix all the ills this craze for absolutism produces. Politics only works at the lowest level. In the US that would be counties. People should know their elected representatives. State capitals are already party machines and DC is a swamp of its own. The further removed policymakers are from the problems of normal people, the more empty virtue signaling regulation they will enact. People should feel the consequences of such rules quickly and directly and that works only at the lowest levels.
Central planning always fails, but the utopian visionaries implementing the plans cannot admit that they are at fault.
