When I was in my teen years, Austria built its one and only nuclear power plant. Right before it was finished, our leading politicians had the outstanding idea to ask the people what they thought of it and they rejected it against all odds. Our chancellor declared that the people did not understand the topic. I was already pro-nuclear back then but, the arrogance of the political class is breathtaking. There are democratic institutions and as long as they can be abused for their purpose, it’s all fine. When the people say no it’s suddenly not important anymore and there are other means to get there.
