Mood in Beijing about trade deal is pessimistic, government source says

China is not used to this. They are used to make promises and never abide by them and get away with it. They know that Western politicians are suckers for good vibes and that they will rather lie to their own citizens than being confrontational with China. They have played the West for the suckers we are. And then came Trump. They must pray day and night that after 2020 there will be a president that they will be able to fool again, as they have done to all the others before. Trump seems to be China’s Kryptonite. Like Trump, hate Trump but we must acknowledge that he knows how to throw them off balance.

China has pushed for a removal of the existing duties as part of the "phase one" deal, but Trump said he had not approved.
