National Ignition Facility Exceeds Break Even Nuclear Fusion

Break-even nuclear fusion – yeah right. They compared the energy contained in the lasers to the energy obtained. When in fact they should have compared the energy used to produce the lasers with the energy obtained and on that count we are still very, very far off. Don’t hold your breath about nuclear fusion quite yet. I don’t expect it to become a commercial reality during the lifetime of my teenage kids. But the stunt and the jubilant press release sure helped release a torrent of research money. Well timed.

An American first on a par with the historical significance of the moon landing – scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory have exceeded fusion break even.
