Let me guess – its not the spill that angered Putin so much. It may well be the fact that this piece of news even got out. If they could have suppressed it everything would have been fine. But now it’s out and will Russia introduce more stringent environmental rules? Think again – arctic oil and gas are no cheap endeavor. You pay a premium for operating in those conditions and no, Russians have no money shitter. So, even with much less stringent rules this is a borderline case at best. Bring it up to developed world standards and face the bill. Won’t happen.
The mishandling of the biggest Arctic oil spill ever infuriated Russian President Vladimir Putin and could be the catalyst for adoption of modern environmental regulations.
