Russia Keeping Unsold Gas Underground

If you buy a new car today and leave it in your garage for 10 years, driving it not once there is a decent chance that it won’t even start without extensive help from the outside. Complex machines don’t get better with age. They deteriorate even if not used. Sometimes you really need to use them to keep them trim. Oil and gas fields are very complex operations, especially so in the deep Arctic. Lots of factors have to play together to keep them flowing optimally. I doubt Gazprom can just switch off gas fields and then switch them on again. Some fields will take damage if not properly handled and in Russia, there is always a chance for that.
