The Reason Why Floods Are So Bad–And It’s Not Climate Change!

I remember when I was a kid, I grew up on the banks of the Thaya river in the far north of Lower Austria. The kids we were then liked the large meadows lining the riverbanks at certain places. They were great to play in but I did not understand why nobody built houses on them so I asked. I was told that they were floodplains and when the river swells, those plains take the excess water. That’s how things were done since the dawn of time. Until one day municipalities started to reclaim this land for construction. There were floods before but there was much less stuff in the way.
