The World Bank Takes a Wrong Turn

We are asking the wrong questions. It should not be “Who is going to head the World Bank and lots of similar institutions” but rather “Do we need all those organizations really”. Many organizations have started out with a relatively clear mandate. Well, not all of them but still. Then they start to have a life of their own and expand their mission. This mission creep exists also in national organizations and it turns into full-blown cancer if not contained. Many if not most of our international organizations have turned cancerous and if we do not check their growth, it’s going to kill the organism. We should ruthlessly cut institutions back but they will fight tooth and nail to keep it the way they are. And it won’t matter one bit to them how much misery they bring. Just like politicians.
