Yes, they are. Because democracy is fundamentally incompatible with anything that’s not rooted in reality. In the long run at least. Democracy allows those strange cults to blossom, it gives them lots of nourishment but eventually, it also does them in. It produces massive suffering by giving all those non-sensical policies a long and deep run. But let’s be frank – look at undemocratic countries. Even China’s countryside – beyond the Potemkin facades – is more like a developing country. Democracies will sweat those problems out and still be better off than pretty much any autocracy.
