China’s Interest In Shell’s Russian Gas Stake Forcing Japan To Stay

The Sakhalin LNG project was once entirely private. Gazprom forced itself onto the partnership of Shell and Mitsui quite some years ago after the hard work had been done. Personally, I was not even sure if Shell might not exit the country altogether at the time. But it did not. Why did Gazprom not kick everyone out and take 100%? I guess they needed Shell’s know-how. Don’t underestimate big LNG plants – they are very complex to build and run. Lots of stuff can go wrong and I have a feeling that they will once China comes onboard instead of Shell. Good luck.
