During the summer of 2017, my home city Vienna was under a massive heat wave. I remember very well as in July I came back from a trip to Brazzaville and upon stepping into the open from the plane, I felt that Vienna was hotter than the Congo. This was very unusual so it stuck in my mind. We hit 42,7 degrees Celsius at the time. Since 2017, Vienna had never seen higher than 39 again so a good deal less hot but still, every single summer the newspapers are full of news about the hottest summer in more than half a century. I once confronted a newspaper editor with their own headline from 2017. She did not even respond but walked away without saying a word.
