ExxonMobil lobbies Biden administration for tax credits for hydrogen made from natural gas

Let me get this right. They want to take Natural Gas, use energy to split the hydrogen from the carbon, put the carbon away so it does not reach the atmosphere, and then store and transport hydrogen for it to be consumed at some place without causing carbon emissions. With all the unsolved problems hydrogen storage and transport bring plus all the dangers. If they just burned the Natural Gas at the place of consumption and then captured the CO2 out of the smokestack they would have the same result in terms of net zero but avoid a lot of costs and unsolved technical riddles plus the endangerment of people. But maybe spending other people’s money in absolutely useless ways is more fun.

If Exxon’s efforts are successful, it will likely open the door for fossil-fuel companies to win billions of dollars in subsidies and become dominant players in hydrogen, which some analysts say is crucial for decarbonizing…
