Hapag-Lloyd working on synthetic methane project to fuel its LNG-powered vessels

The only way synthetic methane starts to make any sense is by using nuclear power as this will be a power-hungry process and you would want the power source to be stable. The biggest limiting factor will be where to get the CO2 from. The most obvious source is the smokestacks of big gas burners. Their exhaust is pretty clean and very rich in CO2, to begin with, but again, all those processes use a lot of power. Players look at synthetic methane because hydrogen is such an unfriendly option. And I am being nice here. Hydrogen is actually very hard to store and transport and also very dangerous. Methane is its very friendly and safe cousin.
