Letter from India: Prosperity and sustainability make uneasy bedfellows

That is as true for any other country as it is for India and I would even go further. Average Indians are used to a much lower standard of life than your average Western European or North American. This also means they are much tougher and can endure things that would make most of us squirm. But we have built massively coddled systems over the past 70 years or more in some cases and hence we have a feeling that we can afford to be idiots with our prosperity when in fact we can’t. Our legacy prosperity is not cast in stone – it can go away very quickly and part of it will be due to stupid choices we made. Indians have a much more realistic view of things than we have – they must.
