Nord Stream 2: Falling at the Last Fence?

Almost one year before the 2016 presidential election in the US I had put down a bet that Trump would win. I still remember the SMS I got when Trump was announced winner. It was a nail biter though. Also in 2016, I bet that NS2 would not be operational by January 1st, 2020. Everyone laughed at me but it looks like I might carry the day once more. What all this jamboree does is masking another truth though. The fact that North Stream 2 is very likely an economical disaster. Why? I don’t believe half of the communicated numbers. And current gas prices in the EU will make it hard for Russia to drill new fields in one of the most challenging environments of this planet, build thousands of miles of onshore pipeline and then a very long subsea section and make the money back. This story is not over by a long shot.

Thanks to interventions by Washington or Brussels, North Stream 2 may end up either not being completed or, once completed, find that much of the pipeline cannot in fact be used.
