Soaring gas prices could see dual-fuelled ships switch from LNG to diesel

I have seen the very beginnings of dual-fueled vessels in the LNG industry. At the time, more than 10 years ago, most people expected this to be the model for the future. It’s enticing – have equipment for two fuels on board and always use the cheaper one. That would be nice if it was like flipping a switch and you use the other one. But that’s far from being the case. You will drip quite some sweat before you commit to switching every single time. And additional equipment always means additional CAPEX that’s essentially dead investment when not used. You will end up using one fuel pretty much all the time.
