Why Paris will be the first post-car metropolis
I have lived in Paris for 8 years. I loved every single year of it but it’s also a drivers hell. But public transport is far from being efficient or even safe. Transforming Paris from what it is today into a car-less city is indeed going to monumental – but seeing is believing. Let’s see how Mrs. Hidalgo fares when drivers realize that their cherished cars are going to be banned. Parisians love their voitures.
In Lima next Wednesday, the International Olympic Committee will rubber-stamp Paris as host of the 2024 Games. By the time the Games begin, Paris will be transformed. “Vehicles with combustion engines driven by private individuals” could well be banned from the city by then, says Jean-Louis Missika, the deputy mayor, whose responsibilities include urban planning.
