So what! The Soviet Union lost the Cold War. It was broke and dissolved. Its empire was held together by bloddy murder, and fear. No surprise when the nations of Central Europe and further east wanted to make sure that they never had to suffer the embrace of the bear again. They wanted to get into NATO much more than the West wanted them to join. If there was any moral fiber to the West, how could it have refused? Russia still wants to be the empire it feels it’s entitled to be. We can turn a blind eye to it and pretend it does not happen while the fringes of the empire erupt. Or we engage and risk their ire. We could have finished the job in 1992. We did not. We pretend that the world is a version of Disneyland and that history is over. There is always a price to pay. The delayed one is usually higher.
