Building confidence in underground hydrogen storage (UHS)

The Austrian outfit RAG ran a project dubbed “sun-storage,” where they pumped hydrogen — made with solar power — into an underground gas storage site, intending to pull it back later. But surprise: what came out wasn’t hydrogen, it was methane. Somehow, the hydrogen had cozied up with CO₂ already lurking down there and cooked up CH₄. So now we’re left asking — is this still “green” methane? It sure as hell didn’t come from fossils, unless you count the crusty activists picketing anything that doesn’t smell like a utopia.
