Climate Change Is Normal and Natural, and Can’t Be Controlled

As a kid, I devoured everything science fiction I could lay my hands on. I read about O’Neil cylinders, Dyson spheres, and terraforming. In my head, Space Civilization was a freak show. Little did I care about orbital mechanics and the realities of energy budgets. The world was simple and it was simple to change entire planets. Age brought reality and an understanding of the challenge even to enact tiny changes in huge, chaotic systems such as a planet-sized lump of rock presents. We humans are still mere ants. If the planet had any conscience, it would hardly have noticed us. We must be like the microscopic mites that live on our skin. Maybe, one day in the future, humanity may be able to control the climate of a planet. That day is nowhere near.
