Europe’s planned hydrogen pipeline network deemed impractical and unrealistic

Cooler heads prevailed it seems. Hydrogen in Europe’s gas pipes would have constituted a major safety hazard. Hydrogen makes steel brittle and also bloats it so it loses its strength. But gas pipelines are nothing but long steel tubes under a lot of pressure. If the steel loses its strength, it will rupture and whoever experienced a pressure explosion of a gas line will be able to tell you that you don’t want to be close. Natural Gas pipelines have an enviable safety record. It would be shattered in no time. Considering the pipeline density in Europe, much of the continent would have been at risk.
