Gazprom questions Russian gas transit via Ukraine to Europe

It is hard for me to understand how two countries at war can cooperate on something so vital and essential to at least one of them. But one thing must be clear – if Russia cuts Ukraine off (as I thought they would do much earlier) then Russia also cuts off must what remains of the old, Soviet gas export system and with it all the Soviet freebies they have enjoyed for the last 3 decades. I think it would have come to a natural end without the war anyhow as the fields that feed the system through Ukraine start to deplete. Soon there won’t be anything left so Gazproms decision might have nothing to do with the war but with upstream realities and the war is just a convenient excuse.
