Israel’s Leviathan gas field brings energy security, health concerns

It would be funny if it would not be so damn serious. People stand on the beach and oppose something that will make their lifes immeasurably better. Gas from Leviathan will not only eliminate coal-burning, but it also provides the possibility to wean the country off diesel and get heavy transport to use LNG as a fuel. Its a small country so not much in terms of infrastructure is needed. The amount of truly noxious emissions Israel saves this way would make life a whole lot better. But they are afraid of methane gas, a non-toxic harmless gas. Who thinks those folks would be open to a reasoned debate?

A decade after its discovery was lauded as a guarantor of Israel’s energy security, the giant Leviathan natural-gas field started production Tuesday. But instead of anticipating a coal-free future, residents living near the gas platform…
