Letter on hydrogen: Storage matters

Any energy system needs storage as matching supply to demand in time and exactly is almost impossible as we can see with renewables. It’s also extremely expensive as it would require impossibly costly overhead. But storing hydrogen is not easy nor is it cheap. It’s a very small, reactive, volatile molecule that’s not happy to sit in a can until it is needed. It’s also quite dangerous to handle and I am not only talking about explosions. Anyone who has seen hydrogen flames (hint, you don’t as they are nigh invisible) knows that they are a massive safety headache. There are solutions under study but none of them is easy and/or cheap. And we don’t have too much excess printed vapor money anymore to throw at them. Inflation starts to rattle people.
