Russia Sends Oil Thousands Of Miles Through Arctic Circle Again

Most people have just a faint idea of what ice-breaking really means. Those ships are incredibly expensive as they gobble up lots and lots of steel. The additional weight also makes them huge fuel hogs and thats not getting better when they go through thick ice. Costs are so bad that LNG tankers do reloadings in European ports when they come down from Yamal and if you know the price of that you have an idea of the costs of ice class. But why ice class? According to Al Gore, there should be no more ice in the Arctic. Those Russians must have missed his messianic words.

Russia sent its second-ever crude oil shipment east through the Arctic Circle toward China, a route that could give the country a faster way to buyers in Asia.
