So far, it has just been about our money. Wind and solar are ugly, expensive environmental disasters but they are still reasonably safe – within bounds. Hydrogen is very different. It’s a super-aggressive gas that can only be handled by trained professionals and by observing very strict safety guidelines. Is that really something you want in the consumer space? Storing and transporting hydrogen is actually a bigger and way more costly issue than only production. There will be accidents, there will be fires and explosions and we will need to reconsider our material safety margins for everything. Either they don’t know or they don’t care.
