South Africa’s electricity problems started soon after successive ANC governments took power. Their predecessors were politically untenable but they had built an energy system that did what it was supposed to do. It was based on coal because that’s what South Africa always had under its soil. Today’s South African energy needs are of course much bigger but now politics and corruption have taken over. Renewables just make an already horrific situation worse and the way it looks, South Africa will have to suffer through it. This is a failed state in the making.

I was introduced to and met Rudi in Angola when he started to develop his Sub Saharan Africa network. At the time he worked for EconGas/OMV and he tried organizing longterm LNG supply for them under the unlikeliest of all circumstances.
