West Africa’s rising star

I don’t want to spoil the party, and I really would wish for some more success stories from this part of the world, but I have seen sky-high expectations being met with horrible dejection too many times to be up in the air right now. Africa has all the usual problems attached to the resource curse, bundled with much higher than average corruption and an attitude by those in power to strike it rich as fast as they possibly can. They milk any real opportunity long before there even is an opportunity to milk – or they try. And often kill anything interesting in the process. Côte d’Ivoire is a country with a troubled past, and we will have to see how well the potential for oil and gas translates. Let’s hope, but be realistic.
