White Noise and Climate Anxiety

Deep below our brain, just below the Hypothalamus, you will find the Amygdala, a little glad that gives us fright. Back before humans were modern and lived on the prairies, this was an essential organ as it gave us the fear of God from things that might kill us like a hungry lion or a pissed-off hippo. This stress gave our forebears the strength and stamina to extricate ourselves from hairy situations and stay alert. The amygdala is not only useless in modern life and if there are no lions wanting to eat us, but it will create other fears. Most of those fears are imaginary but the amygdala does not care. It wants its due. Only knowledge and experience allow us to deal with our fears – not superstition.
