Nigeria Expects FID on Gas Pipeline with Morocco by Year-End

Nigerian gas that has hitherto been flared shall be used to gasify West Africa and even potentially bring some to Europe. Sounds great. What’s not to love? Looking at the troubled history of the West African Gas Pipeline from Nigeria to Ghana, I don’t have a good feeling. This is supposed to be a very, very long gas line. The longest undersea gas pipeline by any standard and by a very large margin. Gas pipelines are not free and compressors for thousands of miles of pipe will need to be substantial. LNG may be the cheaper option. Also, it’s supposed to be operational in 2046. Thats a long time in the future. Many of us won’t be around or too old to care when that is supposed to happen. Maybe an exercise to push a problem to future generations?
