Riyadh joins Shanghai Cooperation Organization as ties with Beijing grow

No surprise – North America and Europe have half-shunned the de-facto leader of Saudi Arabia Mohammed Ben Salman. North America also does not really need OPEC oil anymore because of its copious shale oil and gas. There is a re-alignment underway and one of the natural things to happen is a fundamental shift toward Asia. It’s also a lot closer than the US. But make no mistake – China is a very iffy partner and the Saudis know that. I expect a lot of propaganda and some heavily publicized projects but Riyadh will still look out for diversification. It would be good if Europe got its act together and offer a solid deal to the dominant OPEC country.
