Russian gas pivots east

If Russia would be capable to transport volumes that were hitherto going to Europe to Asia now, we could have a discussion on a pivot to the East. But that’s not the case. The gas for the PoS comes from fields far in the East. They have never been connected to anything that transports gas to Europe. Similarly, the fields that supply Europe are far away from the PoS. No connection and if they built one, economics would most likely be awful. The Eastern gas has very few utilization scenarios. China is the most solid one. A pivot is made by choice. What choice did Putin have here?
