Scrubbing Plus Onboard Carbon Capture Could be ‘Dream Solution’ to Decarbonise Shipping

And it only works in a dream world. Scrubbing alone is already a nightmare as essentially one runs a complex chemical plant on a moving deck. Then you need to strip out the CO2 from the exhaust stream and store it somehow. Together with all the chemicals and parts that need to be exchanged regularly because there will be wear and tear. Also, there will be a massive amount of cheating as companies will want to save on this super expensive equipment and switch off or run it below capacity to save some green. Much easier to get an LNG new build and start looking at CO2 for what it is – the gas of life and not some heating agent.

While the technology looks attractive, industry sources tell Ship & Bunker the current cost is difficult to justify.
