“something fascinating about science”

Before the space probe New Horizons sent back astonishing pictures from the dwarf planet Pluto, all we had were blotchy images from telescopes. They showed little more than some coarse structure and all scientists had assumed that Pluto is not only lifeless but that it’s geologically inactive. It was boring, to begin with, and it was only our curiosity that made us send a probe there. The reality was starkly different. Pluto turned out to be an extremely dynamic world with lots of interesting features and real beauty. Nothing scientists assumed was true. Venus never had any features Earth has. It’s too close to the Sun for comfort and its atmosphere is too thick. If it had the same composition as Earth’s, it would still be an oven. But graduates in political science won’t know this.
