Trump asked many years ago “Why are we sending money to people that don’t like us very much”? When you don’t have alternatives you have to bite the bullet. Hydrocarbons are not everywhere in commercial quantities so you more or less go and ask those who have them. But shale has leveled the playing field very significantly. At least in theory as only the US has the conditions that allow the exploitation of shale which exists pretty much anywhere. So, to all those regions on earth that think shale is something bad, think again. Every option has a price.
