Is climate change too hard for democracy?

Democracy is an oddity. If it evolves naturally (as it seldomly does) it emerges not out of the regular people but out of the class with skin in the game. It’s the land owners, the business owners, and those with something to lose that usually push for democracy when their old system has failed them. True for the US Revolution but also the French Revolution – in the beginning at least. It’s when democracy turns into popular democracy that things turn nasty. Masses can be manipulated and it does not take a particularly smart politician to find that out. The chase for freebies opens the chase for populism. Populism gives way to virtue signaling and this leads to oppression. Until the cycle renews with revolution.
